Purpose & Values
The Intramural Sports program at Brigham Young University strives to provide a variety of recreational sports selected on the basis of their contribution to the development of the whole individual; physically, socially, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. A competitive spirit of fair play and good sportsmanship is encouraged in order to provide all with a wholesome recreational experience. The Intramural Office strives to provide programming for all levels and ability of experience. Our aim is to serve the recreational sport needs of the Brigham Young University community.
We are dedicated to providing an outstanding recreational sports program by:
• Inspiring students to internalize a Spirit of Sportmanship on and off the playing field.
• Encouraging respect, leadership, and a commitment to excellence.
• Contributing to the Aims of a BYU education.
"Play and recreation are more than mere diversions, they are recuperative requisites in the process of physical, intellectual, and moral development."
- ~Karl G. Maeser, 1893
Sportsmanship
"Athletics are explosive, as any of us know who have participated in them. The problem therefore, is to do everything that is fair and honorable to win, and also to know the line where sportsmanship stops and mockery starts. Stop short of winning if integrity is to be impaired.... Sportsmanship is the spirituality in athletics" (The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson).
Sportsmanship is everyone's responsibility. We hope everyone will conduct himself in a mature and friendly manner. The BYU Intramural Sports program has identified the following principles as our "Spirit of Sportsmanship" guidelines. We encourage all employees, participants, and spectators to incorporate these principles on and off the playing field.
-
Stand as a Witness: We are to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places (Mosiah 18:9). Be consistent with who you are in all situations. "Never check your religion at the door. That kind of discipleship cannot be - it is not discipleship at all." (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland - Israel, Israel, God is Calling. September 2012)
-
Live with Integrity: We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men... (Thirteenth Article of Faith). Honesty applies equally in sports as it does in all other areas of life. Never lower your standards because "it's just a game."
-
Play by the Rules: Do not push limits or escalate the level of physical play to match the style of enforcement. This style of play endangers other players. Intentional disregard for the rules of the game is unsportsmanlike. Play hard, but honor the rules.
-
Be Accountable: Although we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences. Others cannot determine our feelings or thoughts. We are each accountable for what we do and say and should never blame others for our behavior.
-
Live the Golden Rule: And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise (Luke 6:31). Sportsmanship is the Golden Rule in action. Treat others-officials, opponents, spectators, teammates-with honor and respect.
-
Be Meek: If you begin to feel unsettled or agitated, take a personal timeout. Step back to gain composure and perspective. Retaliation does not solve conflict, it only compounds the situation. Demonstrate humility in victory and dignity in defeat.
-
Be Gracious: Compliment your opponent after a good play. Focus on the good. Build people up, do not tear people down. Be genuine when you congratulate your opponent.
-
Have Fun: Men are, that they might have joy (2 Nephi 2:25). Be safe, play fair, and enjoy the experience.
Activity Information
Activities are normally conducted Tuesday through Friday from 6:15 to 10:15 PM and Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 5:15 PM. If needed, games may be scheduled during other hours.
An information sheet for each activity is located on the intramural web page under the 'Event Calendars' menu. Information sheets provide specific details for each activity, such as starting dates, eligibility, tournament format, and rules. All team captains and participants are advised to read the information sheets.
All contests will be governed by the official interscholastic amateur rules as designated on the activity information sheet. Rulebooks for most team sports are available to be checked out from the Intramural Office. In order to equalize competition and to ensure the safety of all participants, the Intramural Program has additional rules for some events. These rules are on the information sheet for each activity. The Intramural Office reserves the right to amend or change any rule when deemed necessary.
For specific concerns about rules, officiating, or the supervision of an intramural activity we encourage you to submit a letter to the Intramural Office. We will take your suggestions seriously and attempt to prevent a recurrence of your situation.
Registration
A semester schedule of activities will be available on the Intramural web page three weeks before each semester begins. The semester schedule indicates the dates that entries will be accepted for each activity and can be accessed through the ‘Event Calendars’ tab.
Team sport registration is accessed through the 'Registration' tab. There will be a non-refundable entry fee for all team sports required at the time of registration. At the conclusion on the online registration period, regular season schedules will be built and team schedules will be distributed at the Intramural Office. Return time and instructions for schedule distribution will be emailed to those purchasing schedules during the online registration period.
DO NOT purchase a team schedule if you are an individual wanting to join a team. Those who purchase a team schedule will be responsible to form their own team. For individuals seeking to form a team, we encourage you to ask friends, ward members, or to access our Free Agent List to fill out your roster.
Entries are limited and participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible for each activity. A wait-list will be created for a sport that fills before the end of the registration period. Individuals on the wait-list will be contacted in order if a schedule or opening becomes available.
Teams must choose an appropriate team name consistent with the ideals and principles of Brigham Young University.
Registration for most Singles and Doubles Events is accessed through the 'Registration' tab. It is
always best to register for these events as soon as possible as entries are
limited. Please ensure that each participant has previously filled out the Intramural
Release Agreement. For those that need to pay the Intramural Activity
Fee, this will also need to be done before registration. An entry form
with a brief classification ranking questionnaire must be filled out by each individual/team. A printed information sheet will be emailed to
each individual/team with important tournament dates and policies.
